The pop art movement began in the UK in the mid 1950s, thanks to some of the iconic artists and the Independent Group. Even today, this art form is extremely popular there, with many people opting for personal art: popart photos personalized with their digital photos. In this article, we will focus on some of those iconic UK popart artists/ art, playing a pivotal role in the movement.

Collage pop art

The earliest introduction to the modern art form was perhaps through collage art. Records indicate that Eduardo Paulazzi, an artist and sculptor, introduced the Independent Group to modern art, through a series of collages which had popular advertising elements in it. Even Richard Hamilton, one of the iconic pop art artists, focused on the collage form of pop art. He has many works to his credit, one of the most popular being ‘Just what it is that makes today’s homes so appealing, so different?’

Banksy

ThisEnglandborn Graffiti artist, was another great name in the graffiti circles. Famous only through is pseudonym of Banksy, few people actually know this artist in person, as he was seldom seen or interviewed. He popularized dark humour with graffiti and his works are great samples of political/ social commentary of those times. He is also renowned for popularizing the stenciling technique, through which images could be replicated quickly and easily.

Peter Blake

Another famous artist who promoted the arts was Peter Blake. His works too showed great influence from advertising, consumerism and other elements of mass media. Like Richard Hamilton, he too worked with the collage form of art, and popularized it in a modern light.

Piet Mondrian

Though originally fromParis, Mondrian moved toLondonin 1938 and plenty of his contributions in popart, came when he was there. His collage works focused on plenty of lines, square and rectangle shapes and bold colours. It was these works that brought him popularity. Though born inNetherlands, the artist traveled acrossLondon,ManhattanandParis, living in varied places and influencing from cultures and art forms wherever he went.

Modern studios

Today many freelance artists and online studios have taken up from where traditional artists have left. Some artists simply recreate portraits in popular styles. Some provide sketches or have developed software that can do the conversions. Few studios are trying to bring together diverse pop art forms on a common interface. They are also offering personal art services, whereby people can get their digital photos converted into pop art styles.

Happy Women’s Day: Popart Photos Tribute to 4 Remarkable Women

March 8 is celebrated across the world as ‘Women’s Day’. But to speak out the truth, the views on the relevance of this day are really biased. For some men ask as to why only women’s day is celebrated, and not a man’s day. Is it not that men too, play diverse roles of the underpaid employee, harassed husband and doting father?

Not just men, many women too find this celebration unnecessary. For they think, that just one day an year, celebrating womanhood is not enough. In fact, all 365 days should be theirs. Women, I say, are not easily pleased.

Well, whatever one’s views are, the fact in the case, the hammer on the nail and the truth of the matter is that we do have an ‘International Woman’s Day’ and that we do globally celebrate it. And this year, artists at the Personal Art studio are celebrating it too, doling out new pop art portraits in dazzling styles with female icons to mark a happy start. The female icons we chose this year are important names, for they lived their lives with zest and zeal. These women were beautiful, both inside and out. And these women contributed in their own way to make the world a better and a happier place.

Clara Zetkin was one such name. Born in 1857, this woman was a German Marxist theorist and an active fighter for woman’s rights. Ever interested in women’s politics, she developed a social-democratic women’s movement in Germany and fought for their rights through her life. Though she died in 1933, her image was immortalized on the ten mark banknote of the (now defunct) GDR.

Audrey Hepburn, British actress  and humanitarian shone like a dazzling star from 1929 to 1993. Her on-screen glamour was not just skin deep, for she spent much of her later years in humanitarian efforts. She associated with UNICEF, after he war-time struggles opened up her eyes to the suffering of the world at large. Pop art photos in Scanner Darkly Style and Polygon style have been created to complement her beauty, inside out.

Amelia Mary Earhart was another prominent name amongst women achievers. Born in 1897, this lady was known for her independent nature, charismatic appeal, persistence and coolness under pressure. A pioneer in American aviation and also an author, she set many records in her lifetime and motivated many women.  What made her even more elusive was her mysterious disappearance in 1937, which led to the creation of many urban legends and theories on what happened to her.

For 2012, Margaret Thatcher was also chosen as an influential leader. The longest serving British Prime Minister, she attracted as much admiration as condemnation. Known as the ‘Iron lady’, this British politician was born in 1857. First a chemist, she later became a barrister and then entered the world of politics as a Member of Parliament. A photo to pop art portrait for this UK activist has been dedicated to her at the studio.

The wonderful women listed above are just a few names from an extensive list. Many unsung heroes out there influence us every day too. In the mundane roles of mother, sister or a friend or in the less celebrated duties of social workers, teachers, doctors or helpers, they make our lives a little better everyday. Here’s wishing all of them a Wonderful Women’s Day.
